The holidays are a great time to spend time with family and feel the joy and excitement all around. Unfortunately, it’s oftentimes not too exciting for the smile. This is because there are many things that can threaten and harm it. So, we know the holidays haven’t quite arrived, but we want to help you prepare for them so you can maintain a strong and healthy smile. Our dentist, Dr. Michael Sanders, would like to give you tips on how to care for your teeth and gums during holiday parties.

First off, it’s best to start with the basics, which is oral hygiene. Leading up to the parties, you need to brush twice a day, floss once a day, and rinse daily. Caring for your smile regularly beforehand can help you have strong teeth and gums that resist the threats of sugar and other harmful substances that can be found at holiday parties. It’s also important to visit your dentist if you’re due for your six-month checkup. This appointment can help you further clean, strengthen, and prepare your teeth.

Second, choose to eat healthy holiday snacks. Some snacks harm the teeth and even encourage tooth decay development, which is why it’s best to stick to the tooth-friendly ones. Those include cheese, celery, carrots, apples, and cheese. If you choose these treats, your smile won’t have to worry about the threats it could face.

Third, keep your smile in mind when you select your holiday beverage. Little did you know, certain drinks can harm the tooth enamel, like coffee, black tea, wine, soda, and sugary drinks. This is because they stain and erode the tooth enamel and even encourage the growth of cavities. It’s best to stick to drinking water. However, if this isn’t an option, make sure to rinse your mouth after you have consumed a tooth-harming drink.
