How to Keep Your Mouth Healthy

Posted .

Keeping a great oral health routine doesn’t have to be difficult! Here are some things to consider as you evaluate your daily dental care routine.

First: Are you brushing twice a day, every day, for 2 minutes per session? This is necessary to make sure you are getting your teeth as clean as they need to be. Use a soft-bristled brush and gentle pressure. Hard bristles or hard pressure can irritate your gums and damage your teeth.

Place the brush on a 45* degree angle to your gums and use short, back-and-forth strokes. Be sure to clean all surfaces of your teeth, including the chewing surfaces.

Second: Support your brushing by flossing every day! This should take 2-3 minutes per day. Be sure to clean in between every tooth, including behind the back teeth! If conventional floss doesn’t work well for you for whatever reason, be aware that there are other interdental cleaners out there for use. Talk to Dr. Michael Sanders about options that may be right for you.

Third: Make sure you are eating well! As you fill your diet with tooth-healthy foods, you will be better able to keep strong teeth and gums. Include lots of dairy products, dark leafy greens, and beans for calcium. Eat lots of whole fruits, whole grains, and vegetables. These provide vitamins and minerals necessary for healthy gums and teeth. Eating phosphorous filled foods such as lean protein is also good for your teeth.

Finally, be sure to visit your dentist often. This will help make sure any problems are caught early– saving you money, aches, and pains. This will also help keep your teeth as clean as they can be, with the help of professional cleanings.
